Growing Older, Growing Better: The Power of Friendship

We had our “Living Proof” small group Christmas party on Thursday evening. The food was great, the conversation was a blast, and we had some fun games and even a little dancing. Can you believe we partied for over three hours, going full throttle right up to 9:30? 😂

Over the years, I’ve realized that since turning 60, my social life has become critically important to my overall health. I am convinced, and research shows, that it not only serves as a powerful buffer against cognitive decline, depression, and heart disease, but it also enhances cognitive function and supports my spiritual well-being, giving my life purpose. I now view my social interactions as essential as my diet and exercise.

In addition to my “Living Proof” small group that meets on Sunday mornings, I belong to two men’s groups that gather for breakfast during the week. I regularly meet with a good friend for lunch, where we bounce things off each other, sort of like accountable partners. I also go to the gym three to four times a week, connecting with my “exercise friends”. Jean and I have our “card playing” and “domino” friends whom we see every few weeks. Additionally, with family gatherings and caring for the grandkids, Jean and I keep our social calendar quite full.

I know I might be perceived as an extrovert, but most of my friends are not. However, one thing we all share is a commitment to meet regularly, which not only helps keep me healthy but also makes life just downright fun.
