“We are going to a Christmas parade and I am sure Santa will be there.” Malachi: “Papaw, we are going to a Christmas parade?” “Yes, and you will need a bag to bring home all the candy you will get”. A few minutes later, Malachi comes back with one of Nana’s tote bags around his neck, almost touching the floor, and says, “This is for all the candy I will get at the parade!” “Yep, I think that will do.”
This might not be the best part of being a papaw, but it sure ranks near the top.
It wasn’t his first parade, but I am pretty sure it will be the one he will never forget. I know it will be one that Jean and I will never forget. We took our soon-to-be 4-year-old grandson, Malachi, to the Dawsonville Christmas parade yesterday. As we were standing next to the road, I told him that the louder he yelled “Merry Christmas”, jumped up and down, and waved, the more candy he would get. Although I was mostly joking with him, it worked! He ended up with 4 or 5 lbs of candy, almost filling up his bag. The little man screamed, jumped up and down, and waved so much that the moment he got in the car, he fell asleep.
As he was going to bed last night, he asked, “Nanna, can we do another Christmas Parade tomorrow?” He slept for 10 hours and got up talking about the parade.
Never pass up an opportunity to create those memorable moments for the grandkids, because they will also become some of your most memorable moments you will ever have.
