So, I was at the gym last week when I noticed this guy, whom I later came to know as Allen, benching some serious weight. Then I saw this young man (who obviously didn't know Allen) go over and talk with him. Allen followed him back to his workout area, gave him a small demonstration, apparently answered his question, and then returned to his workout.
A LIFESTYLE CHANGE HAD TO TAKE PLACE
Wanting to know how he came to have that kind of influence over young people he had never met before, I walked over and started a conversation. It turned out that he has an amazing life story. 6 years ago, Allen realized how much his health had deteriorated and decided he wanted to do something about it. Now, at 50, Allen told me that although the first few years were hard, most of what he does now is maintain. I love what he said: "As I get older, I don't lift heavy, but I still enjoy looking like I do."
IT CAN BE A FAMILY THING
I also had the opportunity to speak with Allen's wife, Tamara, who permitted me to share with you that she is 60. Although they come to the gym together and are constantly conversing, their workouts are designed for their individual needs.
THE HARDEST PART OF BUILDING YOUR STRENGTH BACK
The hardest thing about getting started back to walking and strength-building is putting on your sneakers and getting out the door. Within months, you will have a "Before" and " After" story. I am looking forward to seeing your pictures.
