This Was A Great Hike... For “Experienced” Hikers Over 60.

The History Behind Zwerner Lake, AKA Yahoola Creek Reservoir

I have found that understanding the area’s background adds a lot to your hiking experience. The lake is named after the Zwerner, a prominent Atlanta family, who sold the land to the county. It is a little ironic to me that Zwerner is a German word that means “dwarf”. It perfectly describes this small lake near Dalunigh, Lumpkin County, Georgia.

Also known to locals as Yahoola Creek, a word that comes from the Cherokee language meaning “place of Yahula”. Legend speaks of a Cherokee trader named Yahula who was taken away by the Nunne-hi (spirit people), after which his voice and horse bells were heard singing along the creek. Now that I think back on it, I did hear “our song,” “You’re Still The One” when we were on the tail. However, it might have been coming from Jean’s playlist on her phone.

What to Expect on the 3.5-Mile Loop

The Loop around the lake is well-marked and easy to follow. The trail circles the entire lake, offering several different views that keep the hike interesting from start to finish.

Trail Conditions and Terrain

  • Mostly gentle inclines, it has 3 long, rather steep sections with roots and rocks along the paths. If you are over sixty and a beginner hiker, I don’t recommend this hike.

  • Although it had rained the day before, the trail was mostly dry with no mud.

  • There were a few sunlit spots, but most of the trail is shaded by mature trees, making it a great trail in the summer months.

Scenic Highlights

  • With no undergrowth and on the trees, the view of the lake was almost constant during the entire hike.

  • I am sure if it was the previous 3 weeks of cold weather that kept us from seeing any wildlife, although we did hear a couple of woodpeckers and found a shedded snake skin on the trail.

  • Lots of spots with benches are perfect for resting or photographing.y

Activities Beyond Hiking

While the Loop itself is the main attraction, Zwerner Lake offers other activities that can complement your visit:

  • Fishing: The reservoir is stocked with fish, making it a popular spot for anglers.

  • Picnicking: There are picnic tables at the trailhead and along the lake trail.

  • Boat Launch: Great for kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. Electric trolling motors only.

  • Birdwatching: The diverse habitat attracts many bird species, making it ideal for birdwatching enthusiasts.

  • Photography: The natural setting offers excellent opportunities for landscape and wildlife photography.

These options make Yahoola Reservoir a versatile destination for outdoor lovers.

Tips for Visiting During Different Seasons

Each season brings its own charm to the Yahoola Reservoir loop:

  • Spring: Wildflowers bloom, and wildlife is active. Trails may be muddy after rain.

  • Summer: Warm weather and full foliage provide lots of shade, but bring plenty of water.

  • Fall: Colorful leaves create stunning scenery, perfect for photography.

  • Winter: Cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking, though some areas may be damp.

Summary Of Zwerner Lake

If you are over 60 and an experienced hiker, this is a fun and well-worth-the-trip experience. If you are a beginner, you might want to get a few easier hikes under your belt before you try this.
