šŸŒ§ļø WHEN PLAN A GETS WASHED OUT, TRY PLAN B!Ā šŸ„¾šŸ˜„

This morning, the weather forecast confidently assured us that the rain wouldn't arrive until mid-afternoon. Apparently, the rain didn't get the memo.

With that encouraging forecast, we headed to Helen for our scheduled hike around the Unicoi Trail Loop. But when Jean and I arrived at 8:45 a.m., it was already raining, and judging by the muddy trail, it had been raining for quite a while.

Unfortunately, I had to make a few disappointing phone calls to let our hikers know the hike was canceled.

As Jean and I started driving home, we eventually left the rain behind. I looked over at her and said, "We're already out here. Let's find another trail."

A quick search on the AllTrails app led us to the Whitley Gap Shelter Trail, about six miles away. Neither of us had ever hiked it before.

The trail is listed as "moderate." Let's just say whoever rated it may have been a 25-year-old mountain goat. For this 71-year-old, it felt like moderate-plus! šŸ˜„

Even so, it turned out to be a wonderful hike. We enjoyed beautiful scenery, some challenging climbs, and even met a few hikers trekking the Appalachian Trail.

What started as a disappointing morning turned into an unexpected adventure.

One thing hiking—and life—has taught me is that things don't always go according to plan. Forecasts are wrong. Plans change. Trails get muddy.

But when you stay flexible and row with the flow rather than fight the current, good things often happen.

Today's canceled hike led us to a trail we had never seen before.

Not a bad reminder that sometimes the detours turn out to be the destination.

Hope to see everyone on the next adventure! šŸ„¾šŸ‹šŸ˜Š
