“You're Never Too Old To Set Another Goal Or Dream A New Dream.” C. S. Lewis

Did you know Colonel Sanders was 65 years old, sleeping in his car, and nearly broke when he began franchising his Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) business in 1952? Did you know that Laura Ingalls Wilder began writing “Little House on the Prairie” at age 65? Were you aware that Grandma Moses (Anna Marie Robertson Moses) began her professional painting career at 78? Mohr Keet, a WWII veteran, became the world’s oldest bungee jumper in 2010 at the age of 96 (he didn’t begin jumping until he was 88).

Imagine waking up every day with the thrill of doing something different or learning something new. One of the incredible aspects of God is that He represents a fresh beginning. With every morning, there comes another opportunity to do the things that you always wanted to do, the things that you are gifted to do, things you were divinely called to do... no matter your age.

The fear of looking foolish can cause you to miss out on the best things retirement has to offer.

Although for years I had convinced myself that what others thought would not hold me back from doing the things that I wanted to do, especially the things I was divinely called to do, it did. All of that changed early on a weekday morning in February of 1996, with a divine epiphany. I began making decisions based on what God said to me rather than on fear of what others might think of me.

Over the years since that face-to-face encounter, I have learned that feeling embarrassed at times or appearing foolish is part of the process of learning new things or trying something different. But I have also learned that it is a small price to pay to live the life I always wanted to live in this fourth quarter of life. If you haven't noticed, second chances are scarce at this stage of life.

Looking foolish to some people is a small price to pay for getting to live the life you have always dreamed of

A couple of weeks back, I celebrated my 71st birthday. What I'm going to share might seem foolish to some, and I'm fine with that. Because what I get in return is worth it. I wake up in the mornings excited about the day's possibilities. I get up, looking forward to seeing who God will send my way to help and encourage.

I'm not denying that there are mornings when I wake up with aches and pains and don't feel like going to the gym, attending a men's group breakfast, or even talking with people. And even when days start like that, they are very few and very far between

An important part of setting goals and dreaming dreams is celebrating milestones.

I have also learned that an important part of setting goals and dreaming new dreams is acknowledging and celebrating milestones and successes with your family and friends, no matter how small.

So, I invite you to join me in celebrating some goals achieved and new dreams realized. But most importantly, I hope it will encourage you to set goals and pursue the things you have always dreamed of.

  • Over the last four months, I completed a course with the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and obtained my certification as a personal trainer and nutrition coach. Given how much exercise and nutrition have transformed my life, I aim to inspire and assist others in reaching their full potential during their retirement years.

  • I am also celebrating the launch of this revised "LAST BEST BITE " blog site. I hope you take a few minutes to check out all the new topics and features that I hope will help adults over 60 live healthier, happier, and more purposeful lives.

  • I am really excited about the "SLOG" section of "Last Best Bite". Similar to a "VLOG" (Video Log), a SLOG is a SuperLifer Video Log on my new YouTube channel. We cover everything, from saving money and fun exercises to great-tasting, healthy diets, restaurants, traveling, and how to have fun with others over 60.

Other practical tips for setting new goals and dreaming new dreams

  1. Think About Your Passions and Interests: Take time to consider what truly excites and motivates you. Understanding your passions is instilled by God to guide you in fulfilling His purpose for you and to lead others to Him. One way to do that is to talk to loved ones who help you uncover your deepest desires.

  2. Set Specific and Achievable Goals: Clearly define what you want to achieve. Specific goals provide a clear direction and make it easier to track progress. Instead of saying “I want to get fit,” try “I will walk 30 minutes every day.”

  3. Break Your Goals into Smaller, Manageable Steps: I have found that large goals can be overwhelming. Breaking them down into smaller tasks helps you maintain momentum. For example, if you want to write a book, start by writing a page a day.

  4. Stay Positive and Persistent: Challenges and setbacks are part of the journey. When those times come, maintain a positive attitude and remain persistent, knowing that every step brings you closer to your goal. And this is big; surround yourself with supportive people and inspirational content to keep your spirits high.

  5. And Do What I Just Did With You: Celebrate Your Progress and Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small, with friends and family.

Embrace the Limitless Possibilities!

Remember, you are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. Your dreams are valid and achievable, especially after 60!
